The kindness of strangers

I had coffee this afternoon with 'pinetreeblossom' and we had a nice chat. I was blown away by her kindness and I am deeply grateful.

I will try this weekend to send email to those who have helped out. My computer access today is very limited as the shelter is down to one computer that works. They have 3 older Dell desktops that Harvard threw in the trash but 2 of them will not even boot up now.

If anybody reading this has an old desktop collecting dust in a closet I am sure the students who run the shelter would be thrilled to give it a new home.

They can be reached at

Phone: 617-547-2841

Street Address:

66 Winthrop St.
Cambridge, MA
02138
Write info@hshsc.org to learn more about the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter Corporation

Tonight is my last night here as my 14 day bed expires in the morning and then I have to wait a week to reapply. I am not looking forward to the next few days but it is what it is.

Thanks for reading..more tomorrow

It was wonderful meeting you today and enjoying a good conversation. You taught me a lot that I definitely hadn't ever heard about first-hand. From everything we talked about, I personally think you're going to pull through this very rough patch in your life. A lot of people are rooting for you. Thanks for meeting up with me. And keep posting to this blog!

All the best,
Plumtreeblossom (Mare)

Thanks for the info about where to donate old laptops -- I and one of my roommates will see if we can do that, as I upgraded, and he plans to.

Because I know Mare in real life and trust her, I'll donate to your Paypal fund now. Good luck.

hi,

that email address is actually not valid - I got a bounce back from it when I tried to email them about donations.

Just thought you'd want to know.

I woke up at 4 AM and was checking my email and saw this. One of the students told me the address is now

info@hshsc.org

and they have a new web page at

Good luck with your son's Christmas gift. I've sent a small donation.

Just another bit of advice on the general topic of buying your kid a computer. Does he really need a laptop? Desktops are generally cheaper, more durable (not a small consideration when giving it to a younger person) and much less likely to get lost or stolen. Seems like the portability of a laptop is not that important for doing homework.

His high school is putting more and more work online and more and more students are bringing laptops to school where they have wifi and students can share notes. Plus it helps in study sessions the kids have at home.

Keep in mind a kid of 15 has never known a world without the internet and treats it like I did for radio and tv.

My son has an IMac that is pushing 7 and Apple no longer supports it as the latest OS it can handle is 10.3.
